Crufts & The Problem With the German Shepherd Dog

For those of you who watched Crufts 2026, excited to see which German Shepherd Dog made it through to the pastoral group judging, only to be told it had failed its vet check, here’s what happened.
Would it not make more sense to vet check every dog before and not after they have gone into the show ring? So only medically fit and healthy dogs are able to take part? Or maybe there would be so few dogs left it wouldn’t be viable and bigger questions would have to be asked?
As far as the winner of best of breed this year goes, well, shame on The Kennel Club for allowing a convicted animal abuser to even be taking part, let alone winning their top prize and shame on them again for allowing such an unhealthy example of the Clumber Spaniel to take top spot, setting a bad example of what to aim for.
That poor dog, look at its eyes. How did that pass a vet check?
